Spirits in a Material World

Spirits in a Material World

We've been talking about fashion a lot here with it being New York Fashion Week and all. But when it comes to getting dressed, our physical bodies aren't the only ones we dress everyday. It goes without saying that great style is not just about clothes. And because so much of really knowing your style is knowing yourself, it would seem a forum dedicated to understanding style would be incomplete without some attention to the spirit underneath the clothes. So, introducing a regular feature, Dress Your Spirit, wherein we'll be paying focused attention to the style that can only emanate from within. Today, one of my favorite passages ever from the dancer Martha Graham.

___________

There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you.
