One Who...Borrows Des Garçons

One Who...Borrows Des Garçons

Take a ride on an Italian commuter rail at rush hour and you'll notice this: the men who look stylish have a firm understanding of the principles of getting dressed. They get tailoring, the importance of fit, and how to add interest to their outfit through attention to details.

This is one of the most standard combinations imaginable: black pants and a crisp white shirt, but attention to fit and proportion makes it exceptional. Takeaway: find a tailor; put on speedial. Via The Sartorialist

Perhaps because men have fewer variables to play with than we do, they have to focus more closely on what they can work with, and I think style is found in precisely that attention to detail. Here are two men who are a case in point.

Rabih Kayrouz: The Beckoning Brooch

Monochromatic jeans and a blazer made so special with the addition of a dramatic striped scarf (is this Fendi?) and a fantastic brooch.

This entire look is everything I aspire to- an extravagant striped coat, a brooch, and a great pop of both culture and color courtesy of the tarbouche. It even prompted me to dust off my Dad's old tarbouche which looked absolutely ridiculous on me. More to come on this because my tarbouche aspirations are far from over.

Cary Grant: The Aspirational Ascot

Cary Grant is a style icon for a million reasons, all of which are valid. Here, he shows us how a little ascot can add a lot of drama to a simple outfit.

Here's Cary being generally fabulous in the South of France in Hitchcock's To Catch A Thief. Notice the pattern play- striped sweater coupled with a bright red polka dot ascot. Mr. Grant is not the only guy we know who loves a good stripe.

Stop it, Cary. Here, also in To Catch A Thief, a subtle white dot on a black silk ascot makes him even more irresistible to an equally irresistible Grace Kelly.

Lest you think I was kidding regarding Grace Kelly's irresistibility:

I mean, who wouldn't put on an ascot to attract the attention of this woman?!

Also, here's a nice reminder that when you put effort into your appearance, people take notice.
