Get Me in a Kaftan ASAP
As I continue to plot my departure from a two year philosophy of sartorial minimalism, I'm contemplating what my new closet might consist of. It's all on the table- tassels, robes, turbans, jewelry- I'm laying it all out in hopes of carefully curating items that will hold my interest beyond the reaches of whatever phase I'm currently going through.
Lately, I've been feeling *very* strongly about looser silhouettes and heaps of draped fabric, especially silks. Accessorized interestingly, these kinds of fabric-heavy silhouettes offer so much opportunity to experiment with personal style, which is exactly what I want to be doing right now.
Via the wonders of Instagram (which I am slowly discovering) a cool account I follow (here! follow them too!) linked to another cool account featuring quite a cool lady (here!) who has visually established the world's most compelling case for a kaftan. Here is Sofia el Arabi teaching a master class on kaftan styling.
The styling here is a solid 10/10. The structure of the coat complements the fluidity of the kaftan and provides a totally unexpected element. Cuffing at the sleeve furthers the visual interest here and helps make the look her own.
Sofia's back with a coat and hat over a kaftan over pants. Note the coat's length. It's attention to these small details that make a look resonant.
Talk about a piece that can hold my interest for a long time to come. This silk kaftan can be worn in so many versatile ways. I love the muted color and the ease with which the fabric drapes. If you thumb through Sofia's account, you'll notice she styles the same kaftan in many different ways: wearing it over her outfits, under pieces, tying it around her waist, and so forth. And ultimately, isn't what makes us stylish our ability to creatively personalize and transform what we wear?
Currently on my acquisition: a luxurious silk kaftan. I'll keep you posted when I find it. In the mean time, if you're compelled by kaftans, let's talk about it.
