The Buoying Powers of Red Lipstick
As the seasons transition and I turn to thinking about how I'd like to dress in fall...and then winter, I've been in some wardrobe flux. I used to be pretty perplexed about these ebbs and flows in my relationship with my clothes, but now, it all seems kind of natural to me. After all, a wardrobe is a living thing in dynamic relationship with us, and we're always changing. During this time of seasonal transition, I haven't been shopping much, and things are also different now that I'm not a quick visit away from my beloved tailor in Paris and can't just have something wonderful whipped up.
During this flux, I've found myself reaching for small things to make getting dressed feel connective again. One thing I've done almost on a daily basis for the last two weeks is wear red lipstick. I've always noticed a sort of gravitation to red lipstick for reasons at opposite ends of the spectrum. I either wear red lipstick when I feel really great, or when I don't and need a little protection from my clothes. I can't quite say why I've been so strongly pulled towards red lipstick recently, but I can report this as a result of my experimentation: red lipstick is a bona fide sartorial force. It can serve as a catalyst to provoke the urge to build a more elaborate look, or it can just as easily be a standalone act. If you're looking to infuse your closet with a quick spark, why not try a simple, straightforward red rouge?
Eager to hear if you give it a try. 💋
