What I Wish for the Moments Ahead
Every breath is a chance to be reborn.
- Shams Tabrizi
The concept of time passing, or perhaps the way modern society frames its passage, often eludes me. We make much of the start of a New Year, we fête birthdays and anniversaries. But in an attempt to consciously mark special days, do we unwittingly discount the value of ordinary ones? Factor in technology filling the space in our time and our cultural obsession with speed, and it's not hard to see how we're living in a world warping our relationship with time.
But it doesn't have to be so.
With each year that passes, I've come to believe less in the power of a New Year and more in the potential of a new day. A new moment even. Or as Tabrizi puts it, a new breath. How empowering is it to believe that these micro measures of time in our lives carry whatever weight and significance we attach to them. We can become who we are, we can achieve what we desire in this moment, and the next, and each one after that. The potential is limitless, the possibilities abound.
So for the many moments of the year to come, and those thereafter, these are some of my wishes.
I wish for magic.
The appearance of things changes according to the emotions; and thus we see magic and beauty in them, while the magic and beauty are really in ourselves.
- Khalil Gibran
And for light.
How did the rose ever open its heart and give to this world all of its beauty? It felt the encouragement of Light against its being.
For creativity to flow from my being.
The painter has the Universe in his mind and hands.
- Leonardo da Vinci
And for silence.
This silence, this moment, every moment, if it's genuinely inside you, brings what you need. There's nothing to believe. Only when I stopped believing in myself did I come into this beauty. Sit quietly, and listen for a voice that will say, 'Be more silent.' Die and be quiet. Quietness is the surest sign that you've died. Your old life was a frantic running from silence. Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking. Live in silence.
Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it.
Patience is not sitting and waiting, it is foreseeing. It is looking at the thorn and seeing rose, looking at the night and seeing the day.
And all these things, I wish them also for you.
